Choosing where to stay in Mozambique depends on your route. Unlike a single-resort destination, most Mabeco expeditions link three or four distinct regions — and each calls for a different style of accommodation. This guide covers the properties we use on our itineraries, organised from south to north.
Maputo City — Hotel Terminus
Hotel Terminus is the starting and ending point for most Mabeco expeditions. A classic, comfortable hotel in the heart of Maputo, it offers modern amenities, an excellent restaurant and a refreshing pool — the perfect place to recover from your flight before heading into the bush or up the coast.
Used on: Azada Verde Conservation Tour, Surfari Moz, 16-Day Signature Tour, and most multi-day departures from the capital. Typically booked on a bed & breakfast basis for one or two nights at the start and end of your trip.
Maputo National Park — Camp Mabeco & Membene Camp
For a true safari experience within two hours of Maputo, you need to stay inside the park. Camp Mabeco is an exclusive luxury tented camp nestled deep within Maputo National Park. Full board meals are included, and you fall asleep to the sounds of the African bush after a day tracking elephants through coastal forest. Used on our Azada Verde tour and extended Maputo NP itineraries.
Membene Camp (Ponta Membene Eco-Lodge) offers comfortable forest casitas for multi-day safaris on our Maputo National Park expeditions — ideal for 2 and 3-day options where you want maximum time on game drives without returning to the city each evening.
Southern Coast — Ponta do Ouro & Santa Maria
Tartaruga Lodge in Ponta do Ouro is the base for the opening leg of our Surfari Moz expedition — close to reef and beach breaks along the southern border with South Africa.
On Coastal Escapes, the Santa Maria Peninsula offers comfortable en-suite rooms set among coastal dune forests, with calm lagoon waters and some of the best sunset views on the Mozambican coast — a popular overnight option between Maputo and the open ocean.
Chidenguele — Naara Eco Lodge
An award-winning eco-lodge built on the banks of Lake Nhambavale, Naara Eco Lodge is one of the most tranquil stopovers on any northbound Mozambique route. Luxury safari tents overlook the freshwater lagoon, with exceptional birdwatching and lakeside relaxation. It appears on the Azada Verde tour (Day 4), Surfari Moz and several camping overland routes as a restorative break between safari and coast.
Tofo & Inhambane — Turtle Cove & Bahia Sonambula
Turtle Cove is a relaxed, eco-chic lodge famous for its yoga shala, surf culture and welcoming community atmosphere. Surrounded by palm trees with comfortable chalets, it serves as the base for the Azada Verde conservation programme and several surf and yoga expeditions. Bahia Sonambula is a stunning boutique guesthouse right on Tofo beach — wake up to the sound of the ocean from the breakfast deck before heading out for diving or an ocean safari. Used on Coastal Escapes and the 14-Day Dive Safari.
Central & Northern Coast — Pomene & Bazaruto
Pomene Beach Camp is a remote surf camp deep in the Pomene Reserve, reached on the Surfari Moz route. For island expeditions, Zenguelemo Camp, The Cove and Bahia Mar in the Bazaruto Archipelago provide full-board island stays with dhow sailing and reef snorkelling — featured on our 15-Day Flagship, 16-Day Signature and 12-Day Camping Overland.
Camping & Mobile Options
The 12-Day Camping Overland uses mobile tents and remote bush camps for travellers who want a raw, self-sufficient wilderness experience — particularly at Pomene and Zinave National Park. Camping suits adventurous groups who prioritise access over comfort; lodge-based itineraries offer a softer landing after long drive days.
Planning Your Stay
On all Mabeco packaged tours, accommodation is included and booked for you — along with transfers, park fees and expert guiding. Most city and beach properties operate on bed & breakfast (BB); remote safari and island camps are typically full board (FB) because there are no restaurants nearby.
